Chrissy Teigen in Postpartum Diapers
Christine "Chrissy" Teigen, model and wife of John Legend just recently blew the whistle on a postpartum issue many woman unexpectedly find them self in with this one tweet:
"No One Told Me I Would Be Coming Home in Diapers Too"
Ah, yes. DIAPERS! No stranger to comedic one liners, Chrissy, apparently has no qualms about laughing at herself; and we LOVE her for it. But seriously, many women after having a baby, are shocked to realize they lack the same level of uterine control they had pre pregnancy. Postpartum incontinence can be caused by a few factors.
"During pregnancy, there is three times the normal pressure on your pelvic floor muscles, and combined with the increase in the relaxin hormone, your pelvic floor will naturally become stretched," Tania Boler, the creator of the Elvie, a device created to help women strengthen these muscles. More shockingly, "Many women think that if they have a Caesarian that their pelvic floor muscles will be spared, but this really isn't the case. ... It's shocking how little education pregnant women are given about how to look after their pelvic floor."
Fortunately, with training, and Kegel exercises, the muscles can regain a lot of it's pre pregnancy strength. The bigger issue here, however, is the lack of information most women have during pregnancy leaving them shocked and ill prepared to deal with this and other issues postpartum. Many women, thus find themselves overwhelmed and frustrated attempting to navigate personal, family, and work related issues with little support. At 30, Chrissy" Teigen, never knew she would suffer from incontinence, but I ask you: What's something you wish they told you?
